National Board Certification
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is
a nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nongovernmental agency whose
mission is to advance the quality of teaching and learning
by:
- Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished
teachers should know and be able to do
- Providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers
who meet these standards (National Board Certified Teachers,
or NBCTs)
- Advocating related educational reforms to integrate National
Board certification in American education
- Capitalizing on the expertise of NBCTs

California Professional Teaching Development Centers
Five professional teaching development centers have been established to help improve teaching quality by increasing the number of National Board Certified Teachers throughout California, especially in low-performing schools. The centers are actively recruiting candidates for national board certification and providing support programs and scholarships.
