Timeline for NGSS Implementation in California

The following timeline of events has been compiled by CSTA from various sources including the California Department of Education, the State Board of Education, and the California Legislature. The timeline is updated periodically as information becomes available and as NGSS implementation progresses.

Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) Annual Update – Participate in opportunities in your district to provide input in your district’s LCAP. Implementation of NGSS should be included in State Priority #2 and elsewhere. See for tips.

Fall 2017

NGSS Rollout #4– 2-Day Professional Learning Series: Join science leaders from surrounding regions for the latest series of statewide professional learning symposia exploring the next steps in the journey toward NGSS Implementation. Sept. 12-13: Alameda Co.; Nov. 7-8: San Diego Co.; Nov. 8-9: Fresno Co.; Nov. 14-15: Chico; Nov 29-30: Ventura Co.; Dec. 4-5: Santa Clara Co.


Publication version of the Science Curriculum Framework made available electronically. The pre-publication version is available now.

CSTA Annual California Science Education Conference – Sacramento, CA
Join us for three days of professional learning workshop, networking, and the latest updates on CA NGSS. Workshop strands this year include presentations by the CA NGSS K-8 Early Implementers, the Exploratorium, Monterey Bay Aquarium, California Science Project, and more!

December 2017

California School Dashboard Release – in the late fall of 2017, CDE will release new data on schools and districts via the California School Dashboard. Included in the Dashboard will be a report from every district and LEA on the implementation of academic standards – including NGSS. Look for this report under the “Local Indicators” section of the Dashboard.

Spring 2018

Field Testing Year for New California Science Test (CAST) and 2 nd Pilot Year California Alternate Assessment – Science (CAAS): All students enrolled in grades five, eight will be administered the field test. High school students will be selected by grade to participate once (i.e., grade ten, eleven, or twelve). This new assessment is aligned with the California Next Generation Science Standards.
